• Each year approximately 42,000 people are killed on the nation’s highways. Of that 42,000, approximately 5,000 people lose their lives in truck-related crashes.
• In 2005, 442,000 large trucks were involved in traffic accidents.
• Of these, 5,212 (12 percent) were fatal, and 114,000 involved injuries.
• In 2005, one out of eight fatalities was the result of a collision involving a large truck.
• In 2003, 4,986 people were killed and 122,000 were injured in large truck accidents.
• The average cost of truck crashes between 1997 and 1999 was $62,613.
• Vehicle crashes result in a huge amount of traffic congestion. According to the 2000 census, trucking accidents alone accounted for 98,000 hours of congestion nationwide.

Injurious and fatal auto, truck, and tractor-trailer accident statistics

• Florida is ranked third among the 10 states with the highest fatality percentages for 2001 (behind California and Texas) with the loss of 365 lives.
• Of these fatalities, 79 percent were passengers in smaller vehicles. Twenty percent involved pedestrians and drivers of large trucks.
• Trucking employs one in 20 people in the state of Florida and accounts for 74 percent of the state’s freight (cargo) traffic.
• In 2001, the economic cost to the State of Florida for all fatal crashes was $365 million; the cost of all crashes, fatal and non-fatal, was $14 billion.
